Africa

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation has been active in sub-Saharan Africa since the 1970s, offering consultancy work and political education, and collaborating in research activities of liberal think tanks and NGOs.

The individual projects are designed according to the foundation’s current focal issues: Freedom and Property, Freedom and Civil Society and Freedom and the Rule of Law. Among the ambitious objectives pursued together with prominent liberal partner organisations are the sustainable development of market forces on the continent, the safeguarding of human and civil rights and, most importantly, the establishment and strengthening of the rule of law and democracy, so that cooperation with sub-Saharan Africa may develop into a long–term mutually successful partnership.

Through its activities in sub-Saharan Africa the foundation strives towards overcoming barriers and identifying opportunities for future development, as well as identifying solutions for political and economic problems that were triggered by overregulation, lack of the rule of law, weak democratic institutions, lack of infrastructure and poor education systems. In recent years, the foundation has mainly collaborated with liberal parties and civil society in encouraging these processes.

The Regional Office in South Africa is responsible for networking among different reform movements, thereby securing a continuous transfer of knowledge and information. The Regional Office offers targeted activities in the field of political and strategic consultation, dialogue platforms, workshops and seminars. Partners on a regional level are: the Africa Liberal Network (ALN), the Organisation of African Liberal Youth (OALY) and the Southern African Legal Assistance Network (SALAN).

The foundation also has offices in Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Ghana , Senegal and Ivory Coast.
